The Project Story

Client Overview: Access EFM

Access EFM stands as a pioneering entity in the healthcare technology sector, specializing in patient electronic signature solutions seamlessly integrated into prominent hospital EMR systems like MEDITECH, Oracle Cerner, and Epic. Leveraging advanced technology, Access EFM aimed to streamline hospital workflows, enhance patient experience, and ensure compliance through efficient document management.

Role and Contributions

As the fractional Chief Marketing Officer, I spearheaded Access EFM's marketing endeavors, strategically guiding the branding, directing the marketing team, and managing the budget over three years. My leadership was instrumental in two pivotal projects:

Project 1: Launching "Focus" - A Mobile Patient eSignature Platform

The Challenge:

The healthcare sector faced a significant bottleneck with paper-based documentation processes, impairing patient experiences and operational efficiencies. Access EFM identified an opportunity to innovate by extending electronic signature capabilities to patients' mobile devices, enabling pre-hospital documentation completion.

Solution and Strategy:

I led the creation and execution of a comprehensive branding and go-to-market strategy for "Focus," a mobile patient eSignature technology platform. "Focus" was conceived to emphasize the technology's core benefit - allowing healthcare providers to concentrate more on patient care rather than paperwork. The branding strategy revolved around the concept of empowering patients to use their personal devices for document completion, thereby personalizing and streamlining their hospital admission process.

The go-to-market strategy was built around emotive marketing, showcasing real-world scenarios where patients experienced frustration with traditional paperwork and contrasting these with their satisfaction using "Focus" on their mobile devices. This approach prioritized human emotions and the personal connection to technology, significantly enhancing patient engagement and adoption.

Outcome:

The launch of "Focus" marked a transformative moment in patient care and hospital administration. By capitalizing on the ubiquity of mobile devices and the personal attachment users have to them, "Focus" offered a seamless, efficient, and highly personalized patient experience. This innovation not only elevated Access EFM's market position but also set new standards for patient-centric care in the healthcare industry.

Project 2: Facilitating a Strategic Exit through Value Enhancement

The Challenge:

In pursuit of an exit strategy for Access EFM's owner, there was a critical need to amplify the company's market value, demonstrating its strategic position and potential for growth.

Solution and Strategy:

My strategic vision for Access EFM entailed a multi-faceted approach to market positioning, emphasizing customer success stories, strategic partnerships, and a commanding industry presence. This strategy was meticulously designed to attract potential buyers by highlighting Access EFM's innovative solutions, global market penetration, and the solid foundation for future expansion.

Outcome:

The strategic marketing efforts culminated in significantly increased demand and market interest in Access EFM, culminating in its acquisition by Phreesia in August 2023. This acquisition not only provided a successful exit for the owner but also positioned Phreesia to leverage Access EFM's technologies and market presence for continued growth. Post-acquisition, I contributed to the seamless integration and transition within Phreesia, ensuring continuity and strategic alignment.

Conclusion

Through visionary leadership and strategic marketing initiatives, these projects not only transformed Access EFM's market positioning but also significantly contributed to the healthcare industry's evolution towards more patient-centric and efficient practices. My role as the fractional CMO under The Upward Spiral Group underscored the impact of strategic marketing in driving technological adoption and corporate transitions in the healthcare sector.
